LB’s Lounge: The Best Happy Hour in GR — If You Can Find It

LB’s Lounge is an excellent place for an after work beer, with plenty of room, a laid-back  feel and what may be the best happy hour in the city right now. Our intrepid roving reviewer Ben Brugger gave it test run.

Well, here we go again. It’s the end of winter and I still find myself spending a lot of time slipping’ and slid’n around this crazy town, trying not kill people with my stupid car. And, I’ve got to say folks, after 12 years away from this crazy weather I have a newfound understanding for why everyone drives like maniacs during other nine months of the year. Walkin’ a tight rope in a blizzard ain’t a lot of fun after all, so when you hit the ground it’s about damn time for some speed.

Right folks?

LB's Lounge LogoWhich is why drinking becomes so important during these winter months, because we all need to unwind after a hard days work. So with that in mind I’ll get to the point and recommend that you hit up L.B.’s Lounge for happy hour.

It’s someplace downtown. I don’t remember exactly where, but I think there was a parking garage around there somewhere [ed.: it’s next door, and has an hour of free parking]. If you do find it you’ll be stoked because they’ve got a pretty damn good happy hour, and more importantly, one that goes until nine o’clock P.M. $1.50 domestics, $2.00 Michigan brews, some other shit, and a four-dollar margarita. And if that wasn’t enough, they’ve got great service and a girl who sings and plays piano (at least, when I was there).

The only downfall I can see to L.B.’s lounge is that you probably have no idea it exists. Although there are two entrances, not one of them is directly off of the street and there isn’t really any signage that let’s you know it’s there. The entrance I came through takes you on slightly awkward, candle-lit walk through the Louis Benton Steak House. The other one, well, I don’t know what was going there but it seemed to empty into the lobby of a building. This might explain why it was so empty when my assistant and I strolled in there on a Friday night, which it shouldn’t been, because like I said before the place has great drink specials.

It was pretty loungy and low-key, and the staff was extremely friendly and helpful despite the fact that I tend to look like a hobo during the winter. They also did a wonderful job giving us space while my assistant broke down and started crying after only two beers and blabbered on about how messed up her life is. I also learned from our bartender of the existence of a Ninja Turtle shot, which I’m guessing she would make for you if you’re the boozing type. Oh shit, and they’ve also got a six dollar burger deal on Wednesday where you get a huge delicious burger and a big ol’ side of something (in our case mac’n cheese) for six dollars!

So go to L.B.’s, wherever it is. 77 Monroe Center. Bam!

LB’s Lounge is located at 77 Monroe Center NW, Suite 100, Grand Rapids, MI 49503. Enter in the big brass doors off Monroe Center to a lobby shared by LB’s, State Farm and The City Flats Ballroom.

Happy Hour is from 3:00-9:00 PM Monday-Wednesday, and 3:00-7:00 PM Thursday and Friday.  Drink specials include $1.50 domestic bottles, $2.00 drafts, $3.00 wells and wine, and $4.00 signature margaritas.
