Q&A with Jessica from Craft Beer Cellars

Recently Beer O’Clock sat down for a Q&A with Jessica Beeby, one of the co-owners of the Craft Beer Cellar, a new bar located at 404 Ionia Ave SW, in downtown Grand Rapids. Craft Beer Cellar has an extensive variety of bottled beer, cider and mead from around the world and 20 items on tap for you to sit and enjoy. The place is low-key and lovely. Check it out.

Craft Beer Cellar, which is an independently owned and operated franchise, is a new concept for Grand Rapids — what’s known as a “bottle shop.” Think a great beer store, but with the ability to sit down and immediately taste and appreciate your build-your-own-six pack, plus a selection of outstanding draft beers and ciders.

Here’s what Jessica had to say about her new adventure:

BOC: Tell us about Craft Beer Cellars
Jessica: We want people to come and hang out for a few hours. We welcome people to bring food from anywhere. Monday we have game night, Tuesday is tasting night, Wednesday is Kick the Keg night with half off the beers that are almost gone. We want to have fun with people.

BOC: Why Grand Rapids?
Jessica: Of course, it’s Beer City and my husband and I wanted to learn the city together. We moved from Massachusetts, but I have lived in Kalamazoo before. This space near the Downtown Market was one of the first places we saw — came out one November, checked out downtown, saw this across the street on their trip when visiting Grand Rapids and the Downtown Market.

BOC: How do you select your stock?
Jessica: Mostly it’s just based on our personal taste, but we pay attention to trends and what people seem interested in. We aim for two ciders, a couple sours and range of lighter lagers, blondes, hexes, and them some hoppy and darks. We focus on a lot of regions, but of course Michigan is well-represented.

BOC: Fave beer on tap?
Jessica: All of them, but I love the Cedar Springs Kusterer.

BOC: Favorite special beers in bottle?
Jessica: Sierra collar 12-pack — it’s awesome.

BOC: Do most people do the bar or the bottle selection?
Jessica: The bar is a draw. It seems like people gravitate to the bar, then take their glass and wander through the aisles with a basket.

BOC: What does the future hold?
Jessica: Looking to expand the programming — tastings, beer dinners, food pairings — we are joining with local food purveyors to design the pairings. We also want to do a Beer of the Month club. Select your quantity — 6 or 12 beers — and we’ll pick out a pack for you based on your likes. Pick them up at the shop.

BOC: What would you love to carry that has been elusive?
Jessica: Some brands from out East that are not available out here. Beers like Bantam cider from Somerville, MA. Wunderkind cider — you can drink it forever. Flower Power from Ithaca. But they pretty much work the east coast. But, Spencer Brewing from MA — US’s only Trappist Brewery coming in a couple weeks!!!
