Tavern on the Square, in Grand Rapids’ Ionia Street bar smattering, is a sorta mod, sorta trad bar with a really excellent all-weather outdoor area.
A great place to hang out at in the summer if you can get one of the very few seats on the patio. Luckily Tavern on the Square is generally not very busy and you’ll likely be able to get a spot.
While this bar is not exactly a GR favorite — really a second line choice for Ionia Street bargoers (but with HopCat and Stella’s there, who can blame them) — we at Beer O’Clock GR have whiled away long warm evenings on their patio, just watching the Ionia parade slide by. If they’re having a good drink special that night, put the cab company on speed dial and prepare to camp out for the duration.
For our money, it doesn’t get much better than that: cheap drinks, warm air, facing the late summer sunset in a place where a group of friends can actually hear each other talk.
